Cockroach Control Sydney
Sydney's climate is made for cockroaches
Sydney's warm, humid summers and mild winters give cockroaches a long breeding season. Inside heated homes and apartments, the most troublesome species keep breeding all year round. Add some of the densest housing in Australia, with older apartment blocks, terraces and shared plumbing, and you have ideal conditions for an infestation to spread from one home to the next.
Know your Sydney cockroach
- German cockroach (Blattella germanica): small (about 12–15 mm), light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. This is the indoor pest: kitchens, bathrooms, behind fridges and dishwashers, inside cabinet hinges. Females carry their egg case until it's about to hatch, so populations grow fast. They're the most common call-out in apartments and food businesses.
- American cockroach (Periplaneta americana): large (up to about 40 mm), reddish-brown, often coming up from drains, sewers, subfloors and grease traps. Common around older buildings and commercial kitchens.
- Australian cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae): similar size, with distinctive pale yellow edges on the wings and a pale band around the head shield. It lives in garden mulch and leaf litter and wanders indoors, especially in warm weather.
- Smoky brown cockroach (Periplaneta fuliginosa): dark, uniform brown. Lives outdoors in gardens and wall cavities and is drawn to lights on humid nights.
Getting the species right matters, because a German cockroach problem and an outdoor-species problem need completely different treatments.
Where we see them across Sydney
- Apartments in the east, inner west and around Parramatta, Chatswood and the CBD. German cockroaches move between units via service risers, shared walls and bin rooms. Treating one unit alone often just pushes them next door.
- Terraces and older homes in Paddington, Newtown, Balmain and Marrickville, where joined walls and old plumbing make entry easy.
- Western and south-western suburbs like Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool and Campbelltown, where hot summers drive large outdoor species indoors through drains and gaps.
- Restaurants, cafés and takeaway shops on every busy dining strip, where food-safety compliance depends on documented pest control.
How our cockroach treatment works
- Inspection and identification: we find out which species you have, where they're harbouring and how they're getting in.
- Targeted gel baiting: professional baits go into cracks, hinges, appliance voids and under sinks, right where German cockroaches live. Cockroaches carry the bait back and share it, reaching the ones you never see.
- Insect growth regulator (IGR): this breaks the breeding cycle so nymphs can't mature into breeding adults.
- Perimeter and drain treatment for outdoor species: we treat entry points, subfloors, weep holes and drains where American, Australian and smoky brown cockroaches come in.
- Report and follow-up advice: you get a detailed service report, plus simple steps (sealing gaps, managing food and moisture) that stop them coming back.
Why you might see more cockroaches at first: as the baits work, cockroaches come out of hiding during the day. That's normal for the first week or two and a sign the treatment is reaching them.
Apartments and strata
For unit blocks, the most effective approach is to treat all affected units plus common areas such as bin rooms, garbage chutes and plant rooms in one coordinated program. We work directly with strata and building managers to schedule access and provide documentation. That includes newer unit blocks around Rouse Hill Town Centre.
Commercial cockroach control
We provide scheduled treatments for restaurants, cafés, childcare centres, aged care and warehouses across Sydney, with service records suitable for council food-safety inspections and audits.

Cockroach Control Sydney FAQs
Why do I still have cockroaches in winter in Sydney?
German cockroaches live indoors near warmth, food and water, such as behind fridges, dishwashers and ovens, so Sydney's mild winters barely slow them down. Treating them in winter is just as important as in summer.
Can treating just my apartment fix the problem?
Sometimes, but if neighbouring units are infested, cockroaches will keep moving in through shared walls and services. A coordinated treatment across the building, arranged through your strata manager, gives the best long-term result.
Why am I seeing more cockroaches after the treatment?
Baits and growth regulators flush cockroaches out of their hiding spots as they take effect, so increased daytime sightings in the first week or two are normal and a sign the treatment is working.
Is cockroach treatment safe for children and pets?
Gel baits are placed in cracks and crevices out of reach, and we'll explain how long to keep children and pets away from any area treated with a spray.
How much does cockroach control cost in Sydney?
It depends on the species, how widespread the infestation is, and the size and type of property. See our Sydney pest control cost guide for current pricing, or call for a fixed quote.
