Pesticides can enter the human body by any or all of the following methods. Breathing exposure can occur when you breathe air that contains pesticides in the form of vapor, aerosol, or minute particles such as dust. When you eat pesticide-contaminated food or drink pesticide-contaminated water, you are exposed to pesticides through your mouth. Whenever your body is exposed to pesticides, this is known as dermal exposure. Irritation or burns may result. The pesticide might be absorbed through your skin and cause additional health problems in more serious circumstances.

Some pesticides dissipate more quickly than others, increasing the chances of inhalation. On surfaces, some degrade quickly, while others last longer. A dry pesticide in the soil can harm groundwater, but it is less likely to disperse into the air. All of these elements impact the possible danger of exposure in humans and are taken into account by the DPR when developing pesticide use standards.
