Don’t be fooled by how they look. Termites are notorious for their ability to chew through wood and cause significant damage to structures. On average, termites can consume approximately 2.3 grams of wood per day. However, this rate can vary significantly. Some species of termites, such as the subterranean termites, have larger colonies and can cause damage more quickly due to their higher numbers and feeding rates. Let’s look at the different species of termites.

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites are the most common and destructive type of termites. They live in large colonies underground and require contact with soil to survive. These termites build mud tubes to access above-ground food sources, such as wood. Subterranean termites can cause extensive damage to buildings and structures if left untreated.

As long as they can find a passage from the ground to your home, they can easily sneak their way into any wooden material to your home.  Damp woods and smelly crevices can also attract these types of termites.

Drywood Termites

Unlike subterranean termites, drywood termites do not require contact with soil. They infest dry, undecayed wood and can be found in furniture, walls, and wooden structures. Drywood termites are particularly prevalent in warm and dry climates. They do not build mud tubes but create small kick-out holes to discard their fecal pellets, which are distinctive signs of their presence.

Dampwood Termites

As the name suggests, dampwood termites thrive in damp and decaying wood. They are commonly found in areas with high moisture levels, such as basements, attics, and areas prone to water leaks. Dampwood termites do not typically infest structures unless there is already significant moisture damage.

Formosan Termites

Formosan termites are a particularly aggressive and destructive species. Originally from East Asia, they have spread to other parts of the world, including the United States. Formosan termites form massive colonies with millions of individuals and can cause rapid and severe damage to wooden structures. They are known for their ability to construct extensive mud nests and their voracious appetite.

Conehead Termites

Conehead termites, also known as nasutiform termites, are native to the Caribbean and were introduced to Florida in the United States. They derive their name from their distinctive head shape, which resembles a cone. Conehead termites build above-ground nests and construct mud tubes for foraging. They are highly aggressive and can cause significant damage if not addressed promptly.
